Meng Peixin, an associate professor at the School of Art Management and Education of CAFA and a Ph.D in psychology of Beijing Normal University, is the first one to introduce art therapy to theacademic field in China. At the opening ceremony, she said: “I used to say I was the only one who conducted art therapy in the academic field when people said I was the first one. However, in the past twenty years in CAFA, we have gone from a group of people to countless people. Our team has become much larger and our knowledge has been deepened. At such a special moment of a new start for CAFA, a young team from the School of Art Management and Education is growing up, and I wish the conference a great success. " The two main forums of the "2019 Art Therapy International Conference" have been led by international pioneers in the art therapy world, Dr. Cathy Malchiodi, director and chief professor of the American Academy of Trauma Art Therapy, and Dr. Cornelia Elbrecht, a registered art therapist with more than forty years of experience and a pioneer in breakthrough art therapy techniques.
Dr. Cathy Malchiodigives a lecture
Centering on the theme "Expressive Art Therapy, Health and Happiness: A Four-Step Model Focusing on Healing", Dr. Cathy Malchiodi points out that expressive art therapy is the application of visual art, music, dance, drama, creative writing in psychotherapy, counseling, education, and medical treatment.Through the four steps of expressive art—rhythm, sound, story, silence, the person who receives the treatment will re-experience himself/herself in a new way. In this whole process, music and music creation are the exercise of the whole brain, and it is also the only artistic way to regulate a variety of nerves. Compared with other forms of art, it can better activate memory, as well as the individual’s energy and learning capacity. The expressive art is not just a personal expression, but also brings people closer through participation and sensory experience.
Dr. Cornelia Elbrechtgives a lecture
Dr. Cornelia Elbrecht gave a keynote speech entitled "Art as a Body-Centered, Trauma-Informed Therapy". She proposes that individual memory can be divided into explicit memory (ie, cognitive memory) and implicit memory (ie, physical memory). Explicit memory is declarative and episodic, while implicit memory is emotional and procedural. Explicit memory is like an iceberg on the sea, but implicit memory is the huge foundation under the sea level. After experiencing trauma, individuals often have difficulty moving their hands, and it is difficult for them to establish a connection with their body. This is a procedural problem with the implicit memory. By touching mud and other forms of exercise, individuals can gradually re-establish their body sensations. "Trauma is suppressed in the body, and we need to release it." Regular exercises will guide individuals to re-perceive their body, consciousness, hidden emotions and goals, and then re-establish self-cognition and reconstruct the meaning of life. In addition to the main forums, the six sub-forums respectively focus on "The power of Self-Healing", "The Growth of Narrative Painting Therapy", "The healing of Trauma and Special Needs", "Art without Boundaries", "Medicine andArt", and " Creating the Meaning of Life", initiating dialogues and communications from multiple dimensions.
The art therapy workshop specially designed for the participants is also the highlight of this international conference. Art therapists from all over the world guided the participants in six highly interactive workshops, including "Water Game Therapy (WPT)—the Mystery of Water", "Self-Exploration through Mandala—Jung’s Mandala and Mexican Culture", " The Ritual of Resilience—Mandala, Henna Painting and the Application of Kolam "," When Narrative Painting Therapy (NDI) Meets Music Therapy "," The Power of Women Endowed by Art—Exploring Your Feminine Traits”, as well as “Diversity in Harmony Embodied by Art Therapy—the Unbiased Perception of Different Cultures”. These workshops have provided an opportunity for the participants to experience the different forms of art therapy and to feel powerful force of art therapy.
